Dietary fat is a crucial component of a healthy diet. However, not all fats are beneficial to the body, and some have even been known to cause damage to body organs. Trans fats are among the harmful fats. To some extent, brain function is dependent on the nutrients in the blood, so consumption of trans fats leads to memory loss.

During manufacture of trans fats, hydrogen is added to vegetable oil, and, therefore, the oils become solid at room temperature. When consumed, the high cholesterol in the fats is deposited in arteries, partially blocking them. With this, they reduce blood flow to the brain, and this causes memory problems.

  • Trans fats reduce serotonin production in the body.

Serotonin is the hormone that acts as a neurotransmitter in the Central Nervous System. Therefore, low levels of serotonin affect brain health and play a role in memory impairment.

  • Trans fats are pro-oxidant and are therefore bad for the brain.

They increase oxidative stress that causes damage to the cells. They oxidize when heated and act as stressors on body cells. The consequent damage caused in brain cells leads to thinking and memory problems.

  • The fats reduce the body’s ability to absorb Omega 3 oils.

The oils are essential in protecting the sensitive body organs such as the heart and the brain. Omega 3 oils have been known to reduce inflammation which is one of the causes of memory loss. When the body cannot absorb the oils, proper brain function is disrupted.

Additionally, trans-fats have been known to sap energy-sapping effects on various parts of the body, and the brain is no exception. The impact of this is that brain cells will become less responsive and sluggish in their functions
