Glutathione is a protein that is manufactured in the liver from the amino acids – glutamic acids, cysteine and glycine. It can also be found in fruits and vegetables such as tomatoes, spinach, oranges and watermelon. However, the amount of this substance can be diminished if the food is processed or overcooked. This protein is a powerful antioxidant that supports a wide range of immune functions throughout the body. One of its most important functions is in the liver. It plays an important role in the river and greatly affects how the liver works and how well it functions.


How It Works

The liver is one of the vital organs known for its detoxification functions. Together with the kidney, they are the places where the highest levels of glutathione are found. Each and every day, people are exposed to toxins on regular bases. Many of these toxins come from smoking, drinking alcohol and diet sodas, using chemical cleaners and many other sources from the environment. The body’s natural antioxidant, glutathione, prevents these harmful toxins from acting on the body in a harmful manner by making sure that the liver functions properly.

There are two phases during the detoxification process; phase 1 and phase 2. During the first phase, the glutathione is used to tie up the toxins which creates more free radicals. During the second phase, an additional amount of glutathione is required to deal with free radicals produced in the first phase of the detoxification process. This protein transforms the toxins into a substance that the liver can excrete from the body, such as urine.

Basically, glutathione protects the liver and the body in general from harmful effects of alcohol, drugs and other toxins. Insufficient glutathione can cause irreversible damage to the liver. It may also lead to other neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkston’s diseases, Multiple Sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, improper hormone regulation, gastrointestinal inflammation and even cancer.
