Memory [rate]

We have been warned about the dangers of consuming too much junk food but we take no heed. Now a new research has found out that Trans fats, which are found in fast foods can adversely affect the efficiency of the brain. (Trans fat is a type of unsaturated fat which behaves like a saturated fat owing to its chemical structure).

In a recent experiment carried out to find out the impact of trans fats on the brain’s cognitive functions, it was found out that healthy participants who ate junk food for only 5 days performed poorly on cognitive tests that measured mood, attention and speed. It was discovered that consuming junk food for just 5 days regularly can deteriorate your memory to an incredible extent!

How Trans-fats Can Cause Poor Memory

Participants who ate junk food for only 5 days performed poorly on cognitive tests which measured mood, attention and speed. This is due to the fact that trans fats can cause certain chemical reactions that lead to inflammation in the hippocampus area of the brain, thereby hindering it from performing its duties efficiently. Hippocampus is the part of the brain which is associated with memory and special recognition. What’s more, excessive fat and sugar in the body can hamper the activity of a brain peptide called BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) that plays a significant role when it comes to the cognitive functions of the brain. BDNF helps with learning as well as memory formation.

Likewise, the brain contains synapses which are responsible for learning and memory. Consuming too many calories can interfere with the healthy secretion and functioning of these synapses.

As you can see, trans fats are extremely dangerous substances for our mental health. Therefore, it is advisable to stay away from junk foods that are rich in these unhealthy fats, such as French fries, donuts, pizza, hamburgers and even ice cream.
